Mystery money in Japan appears in mailboxes, falls from sky

by Miwa Suzuki
Sun Jul 29, 6:32 PM ET

TOKYO (AFP) - A mystery gripping Japan over anonymous cash gifts has taken a new twist. For those who want the next batch of giveaways, the place to look is in their mailboxes -- or even right at their feet.

Residents of a Tokyo apartment building are baffled after a total of 1.81 million yen (15,210 dollars) was found in 18 mailboxes by Saturday, a police spokesman said.

"The money was in identical plain envelopes, which were unsealed and carried no names or messages," the spokesman told AFP.

But residents became "spooked" rather than pleased with the anonymous gifts -- and were too upright to pocket the money secretly.

"Some people initially suspected they were fake bills. When they realised the bills were real, they reported them to us," the spokesman said.

The predominantly middle-class apartment building in Tokyo is not alone. An envelope with one million yen was left in the mailbox of a 31-year-old woman in the western city of Kobe on Wednesday.

Police admit they have no idea who is leaving the cash -- whether a few people are behind the bizarre giveaways or if Japan is witnessing a craze of copycat benevolence.

Since June, dozens of city halls and other public buildings across the country have reported finding neatly packaged envelopes full of cash in men's restrooms.

The bathroom money has come with identical letters asking people to do good deeds -- leading to speculation that the benefactor may be a public servant trying to cheer up his profession or perhaps a member of a new-age religion.

Japanese cash dropoffs are not always so neat.

On Wednesday, bills worth 960,000 yen were inexplicably seen "falling" in front of a convenience store.

"We can just say the money came from the skies," a puzzled police official said. "There were other passers-by outside and customers in the store but the incident caused no confusion," he said.

"People thought it was too eerie to touch."

A man who contacted police saying his daughter had dropped the money had his claim rejected as groundless, the official said.

The largest single dropoff so far was in the ancient city of Kyoto on July 23, astonishing a 67-year-old woman who found an envelope containing 10 million yen of stacked bills in her mailbox.

But mystery money does not always reach police intact.

A woman walking on a bridge over Tokyo's Sumida River told officers that she saw bills falling at her feet from an elevated expressway above on July 6.

She believes 30 to 40 notes fell but police managed to collect only six notes worth 46,000 yen by the time they arrived.

"Some people were picking the money up on the bridge," the Tokyo Shimbun quoted the woman as saying.

No one can say if more people have collected money and not told police.

Media tallies suggest more than four million yen, including some found last year, has been found in the public restrooms.

Dutifully, police are holding most of the money in case the rightful owner eventually decides to reveal their identity.

conclusion: WHY THE HELL AM I LIVING IN KAGOSHIMA?!!! *pissed*

// ..and then, there was me.

the first sem of this year is almost over. so like every other tradition the university has, going drinking with the labmates (and of course, ur lab sensei) is not the tradition they wish to forget.

so off we went, to this restaurant (i don't think it's called a restaurant tho, more like a bar serving food. haha), just chit chatting, mostly. and kanpai-ing (kanpai = cheers) to the end of the first semester.

and oh, did i mention that i'm the only girl in my lab? but whatever. i'm used to be the only girl -- in the (biological) family, when i was 1st year student (among the msians), kayak trip, n now, in my lab. so, as we were filling our stomachs with food (like we were eating for two, lol.), we discussed bout issues like japanese cellphones, vietnam's economical growth, and all those definitely-not-cakap-kosong-kinda-talk. and unusually for me, i started to feel all cendekiawan-like, u know? coz oh how people know i dislike using my brain. (hehe) until.........

THEY SWITCHED ON THEIR PERVERT MODE!!!

i was like, OMG! my dream of becoming oh-so-intelligent-like was ruined! (roo-innnnnn!) by their stupid talks bout ehem! u figure it out. haha. but in a way, i wasn't surprised. coz it won't be the Mori's lab unless u have that topic stored inside. hahaha. but it was fun seeing those guys arguing bout it (n being stupid =p) while i just sit n enjoy the food. :D i think it took bout half the time we were at the bar. well done, boys!

so, here here to Mori's labmates! (honestly, i love Mori's lab very much coz everyone is so kinda laid back. n u can actually talk with our Mori sensei bout any topic. or ask his advice for anything. n i mean any.)

// weekend of sunburn

so, this is how i got the sunburn. for the first time in my life. ever! :p

last Sunday, went to this kinda camp in a small town in Kagoshima called Kawanabe. well, actually went there for kayaking the next morning, but since there's a small kinda festival that night, we went on sunday instead. (we didn't want to wake up too early in the morning, did we?)

Mitch was the one who invited me, as it was organized by his mom's private school. to be honest, it was a bit expensive for me, but when i thought bout how i've been wanting to do all these kinda (ok, that's the 3rd 'kinda') things and how i might not have another opportunity coming, i agreed to it.

went there at 4.30 and it was supposed to take around 2 hours. but since none of us knows the way to go there, plus, we got lost somewhere.. (haha) so it turned out to a 3-hour-trip instead. arrived in Kasasa Ebisu at 7.30 and quickly watched the mini-concert which had started for an hour. it was ok, i think, and at the end of the band performance, everybody (well, mostly) was dancing. errr, except Tom, of course. lol.

we didn't went straight away to bed after that, instead, we were chit chatting, and drinking, and enjoying the cool breeze by the sea while watching the stars. ahhhhh~ such a nice weather. feels like we're filming some sort of a scene for a drama. ok, whatever. =p after tired of being bitten by the bugs, we went to bed -- err i mean tents, and everybody fell into their zzzzzzzz mode instantly!

impressively, i woke up early the next morning and after preparing ourselves and had breakfast, we moved to the kayak location few minutes from where we were. me, having NO experience in kayak or whatsoever, was a bit nervous; but i know things will be fine coz hey, i have all these boys to rescue me if i drown. hahaha. (fyi, i was the only girl on the trip. and there were 8 of us.)

it was a 2-person-kayak and i was partnered with Yasuo. wow, it needs lots of hand-muscle strength, i think, while i was pedaling that thing. and oh, we were given this kinda thing, like a water gun, and yes, everybody did not (i repeat -- DID NOT) take it for granted, i must say. and who was the most drench person before arriving at the shore??? u get that right -- ME! cheh.

(Mr. Nomoto showed me his skills)

kayaking thru this obstacle, and that, and finally we pulled thru the shore and had lunch -- self made. (tho we didn't exactly cook it -- the organizers did. hehe). and thennnnnn... time for BEACHHHHHH!!!! *curtsies, people!*

(as usual, this is me being vain. lol)

(Melissa once said, where there's Aimy, there's photoshoots!! :p)

(it was actually cold, the water..)

("wheeeeeeeeee~!" i screamed. n Tom can only laugh.)

(with Daiki n Yasuo)

(this is actually how we warmed ourself up coz the sand is so hot! -- with Daiki n Mitch)

(one of Tom's stalking pictures. haha kidding =p)

2 hours later, taking the fastest way to pedal back to the other side, i can see that everybody was exhausted -- but satisfied at the same time. went to the hot spring afterwards to clean up and then back home to the city. and that's the end of our weekend. but not for our sunburn! lol.

(Tom --sleeping)

i was in a way glad that i joined the trip tho it cost me weeks of groceries!! this has definitely been written down in my 'my fulfilled wish' book. =)

THE END.

// 1000

got this song from someone. it's sang by Imran Ajmain with the title "seribu tahun" (1000 years). but i categorized it as those "lie" songs and changed the title to "seribu dalih" instead. ahahaha.

so, here's the lyrics:

Rela ku menunggu mu seribu tahun lama lagi
Tapi benar kah hidup ku kan selama ini
Biar berputar utara selatan
Ku tak putus harapan
Sedia setia

Rela ku mengejar mu seribu batu jauh lagi
Tapi benar kah kaki ku kan tahan sepanjang jalan ini
Biar membisu burung bersiulan
Tenang lah gelombang lautan
Ku masih setia

Chorus:
Ada kah engkau yakin ini cinta
Ada kah engkau pasti ini tuk selama lama nya
Rela ku menunggu mu seribu tahun lama lagi
Tapi benar kah hidup ku kan selama ini
Biar berputar utara selatan
Ku tak putus harapan
Sedia setia

p/s: i'm still in pain of sunburn. damn.

// mission accomplished..NOT!

*sigh* calling that someone after a weeks-of-not-calling mission was absolutely a bad idea. right, dyll? hehe. dyll may be the one who knows best bout this. =p

but then again, the not-calling-at-all mission was also a failure. obviously i can't achieve the main goal of my mission tho it has been going on for 2 weeks. so that's when i told dyll that i wanna try from a diff view. err, i mean calling but acting 'cold'. as if i can do that. cheh.

dyll!!! how the hell did he manage to turn things completely the opposite of what we planned? grrr. headache.. headache..

p/s: alz, u might haf a lilllllll idea of what i was babbling about, n i'm pretty sure u r saying something like "amy... amy.." right about now. haha.

// logan fan-a-tic

just finished downloading and watching the final season of gilmore girls. well, i have to admit, it was not really the series i'm dying to watch and wait for new episodes to be uploaded every week, but since logan appeared on the show, things changed. ahahaha. predictable, eh? :p

anyways, i liked how rory and logan's relationship went well in the beginning. ok, maybe there are ups and downs, but that's normal, right? but all those screaming-at-home-while-watching ended on the episode before the finale of this final season, when rory didn't accept logan's proposal to get married. i mean, are u kidding me?!! people always complaint bout not finding a good partner, a good bf/gf, but rory, having the purrrrrfect bf anyone cud ever asked for, said no to marrying him? what a waste.

i cud understand that she wants to do something that she likes, hence the rejection, but come on! in the end she didn't even get her dream job at the new york times anyways. she'll be writing for some online magazine anyways. and logan had all these things planned for them, and i'm sure he won't just ignore rory's dream of becoming a journalist while making the decision. so he must have thought bout it all over. it's not like there's no place for rory to become a journalist in san francisco. duhh~

and yes, i get it that she's young, but how often do u find that prefect guy? puh-lease, anyone who watched this series would think that logan is as perfect as a man can get, don't u think? i can accept when she broke up with dean (tho it's stupid that she left him for jess), then broke up with jess, and then again, with dean.. all those i can somehow agree why. but logan??? arghhh. i think many girls out there wud kill to have someone like logan! @%&*@#(#))#&%^@$!

i demand they make a new season and rory and logan got married! (tho now i'm starting to think that logan deserves better.) haha.

logan (played by matt czuchry)

// save the men?

the number of male births in the U.S. has steadily decreased over the past 30 years, says a new study. the scary reality: there are 135,000 fewer guys today than in1970, so the dating pool is shrinking. experts don't know why, dubiously citing environmental factors.

scary, huh? no wonder sometimes i have this feeling that i'm like a desperate housewives. haha.
